Open days

Each setting should, if possible, schedule an open day to invite prospective new parents into the setting. Activities can be put on for their children, which are age and stage appropriate and meet the needs of the children, while their parents are in discussion with staff that are in attendance. This is a unique way of delivering the message that the setting is at the heart of the community and that it values and respects the families that attend. You can demonstrate that you listen to the needs and requirements of your community by hosting an open day at the weekend when the parents are free to attend. Parents will then be free to wander around the setting with their child and see what is going on, and perhaps book a visit to come back when the setting is fully functioning to decide on whether to send their child there.

Invite other professionals to attend and get in touch with the local school and family services to ask for their support and let the parents see what a good and collaborative working relationship you have together. Even if the parent decides not to send their child to your setting they may well advertise the fact to other parents and through word of mouth the setting gets new customers, so it can be a good opportunity for marketing your services within the local community.
